Bringing an awareness of our deeper self into our daily lives.

Experiences in Meditation

Experiences we may have during meditation generally fall into these categories:

*Falling asleep
*Having lots of thoughts or emotions, including feelings of restlessness or boredom
*Going beyond our thinking mind and experiencing the silence of our innermost self

Falling asleep during meditation can be a sign that our body needs more rest and if we need to rest that is what we should do. If we occasionally fall asleep during meditation there is no need to be concerned. However, if we are falling asleep every time we sit to meditate we may want to look at the reasons why and ask ourselves how we can get more sleep during the nighttime hours we have set aside for sleep. We might also check to make sure that our sitting posture for meditation is not conducive to sleep. For instance we do not want to make a regular practice of lying down or reclining when we meditate because our bodies will associate this position with sleeping and quite naturally drift off to sleep.

Having lots of thoughts or emotions, including feelings of restlessness or boredom during meditation is generally a sign that we are under a lot of stress and our body is releasing that stress. Therefore, although initially frustrating, this experience may be just what our body needs and with time we will learn to effortlessly observe this process without being critical of ourselves. In fact, being critical of ourselves only keeps us more firmly at the level of our thoughts. Just to observe our thoughts without judgment can be a powerful part of our meditation practice. It is the birth of our awareness that we are not the thoughts we are observing. We are the one who is having those thoughts.

Going beyond our thinking mind and experiencing the silence of our innermost self during meditation is the seemingly magical experience that we desire during meditation. This is where we experience the silent awareness of our essential state, our own spirit. However, we cannot experience this state of awareness and peace without first releasing stress and getting proper rest, which are also necessary and helpful experiences to have during meditation.

Thus, in a practical sense - every meditation is a good meditation and the less we struggle to create a particular experience and simply accept what arises during each meditation the better.
